Therapeutic Gardens Australia

Itโ€™s not just about designing and building the gardens.
Itโ€™s also about getting people out amongst them.

We design and and build unique therapeutic gardens for community, home and office spaces.

Sensory Gardens.

A sensory garden is a garden environment that is designed using plants, hardscapes and materials that engage one's senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound.
It may be used as a calming place and as a gentle way to stimulate the senses, enhance therapies and provide enrichment.

Edible Gardens.

An edible garden is one of the most rewarding journeys to embark on. Providing tangible mental and physical health benefits, an edible garden is a place of immense satisfaction and connection.

The key to a successful garden is all in the design process.

Therapeutic Gardens.

Designed to meet the needs of an individual or organisation, therapeutic gardens can enhance specific treatment programs such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and mental health.

Particular attention is shown to accessibility and engagement.

Our Organisation

As the Chief Executive Officer of LNA Master Landscapers Association (now known as The Landscape Association), Jo identified the need for a central information hub for individuals and organisations wanting to experience the benefits of therapeutic gardens, so she founded 'Therapeutic Gardens Australia'โ€‹

'Therapeutic Gardens Australia'โ€‹ is a resource that brings people together to help design, develop, build and implement much needed natural spaces within our community. With an extensive network of Australiaโ€™s leading landscapers, designers and builders we create edible gardens, sensory spaces and healing gardens for tailored therapeutic outcomes and happier, healthier lives.

Joโ€™s passion to facilitate better health and well-being through natural gardens and landscaping was born from her need to create comfortable, purposeful and holistic living spaces for her autistic son.

โ€œWorking with Jo was my absolute privilege and pleasure! Jo has such a passion for connecting people with outdoor experiences that benefit both physical and mental health. Her knowledge of contemporary, innovative design is so thorough and she always has the clients desired outcome at the forefront. Joโ€™s communication and follow ups kept everything on track and I will definately be using Joโ€™s Therapeutic Garden services again in the future.โ€

Residential Healing Gardens.

After decades of experience creating large scale healing and sensory gardens for communities, we can now provide that same experience and expertise to families. Having seen the benefits a therapeutic garden at home provided my children with, I am passionate about helping families create healing spaces of their own. We can and do work miracles transforming spaces and changing lives with gardens.

What would your healing space include? What do you see yourself doing with it?

You might imagine kneeling in your edible garden amongst an abundant harvest of vegetables, running your fingers through rich, dark soil feeling pride in the literal fruits of your labours.

You might imagine a calming space filled with fragrant herbs and vibrant flowers, a place you can breathe and connect with nature.

You might imagine watching your children play, engage and interact in a meaningful way in a beautiful, interactive space created just for them.

All of these ideas and more are possible! Small spaces need big ideas.

Commercial Healing Gardens

At Therapeutic Gardens we work exclusively with The Landscape Association, AILDM Australian Institute of Landscape Designers and Managers, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, Cultivate NSW (Horticultural Therapists) and AIH Australian Institute of Horticulture members to ensure that we find the right skill sets and the right expert for each specific project.

Together, we work hand in hand to create purpose built gardens and develop horticultural therapy programs for patients in hospitals, medical institutions, special needs childcare facilities, schools and aged-care residences, as well as public spaces and parks.

We make the process easy from start to finish, including accessing funding and grants, conducting targeted client needs surveys and creating an ongoing maintenance plan. You can download our Client Enquiry Form here.

โ€œAs the founder of the 5 Senses Garden in Sydneyโ€™s Inner West, I would like to thank Jo Aquilina of Therapeutic Gardens Australia for her expertise, hard work and generosity.
Jo was instrumental in the development, design and facilitation phase of the project and generously supported and gave her time when ever called upon.
Her experience and ability to draw upon people across her vast networks were incredibly valuable to the development of the garden. Joโ€™s facilitation of workshops once the project was up and running were a rare blend of educational and entertaining.
The 5 Senses Garden project and our community are forever grateful for her contribution.โ€
