Vegepods - Sneak preview: We have a special discount for TGA readers!

Our mission is to get people gardening and realising the therapeutic benefits from gardening, regardless of their mobility levels, medical challenges or the space they have available to them.

To fulfil my mission, we have been researching ways to make gardening more accessible.

We have found a company called VegePod, who develop raised garden bed kits (or 'container gardens').

Here's why we love these container gardens:

  • They require very little space making them ideal for balconies, small courtyards, patios, decks or even as herb gardens. In today’s modern urban environments, many of us don’t have access to a garden but with the vegepod almost anyone can participate in active gardening. Container gardening is great for modern professionals who would like the opportunity to relax and engage with the natural world, for individuals with limited mobility, or for children with ASD or ADHD who need a break from the stresses of their condition. The possibilities are endless!
  • The stands bring them to the perfect height for seated gardeners. The stands are powder coated and ideal for their outside use. Additionally, the stand has lockable castors so the garden can be wheeled to the best spot for those with limited mobility to work on their plants. Container gardening can also be difficult at times on balconies or shady courtyards where seasonal changes can mean that getting the right amount of sun is challenging. With the vegepod rolling stand you can now move your garden to the ideal location to suit the weather conditions.
  • They have a self-watering system that keeps the plants alive for 3-4 weeks. This allows those with irregular health, travel commitments or limited time to be confident that their plants will thrive even when you cannot tend them as often as you would like. Container gardening can be tricky on balconies and in exposed locations on very hot days because they are prone to drying out, but, with this self-water system you can be assured that your plants will have they water they need to survive the summer weather. With the system designed by vegepod you could also reduce your water usage by up to a whopping 80%, making them very environmentally friendly.
  • The range of covers designed by vegepod are ideal for modern urban conditions. They are made from a greenhouse mesh that allows air and water to penetrate, creating a micro-climate that will accelerate plant growth. It also helps to protect your plants, particularly vegetables and herbs, from pests that could destroy your harvest.

TGA founder, Joanne Aquilina met with Simon, one of the owners of VegePods, and is helping them to develop a model that works perfectly around a wheelchair.

Simon was kind enough to provide TGA subscribers with a special discount at their online shop. Simply use the code THERAPGARDENS for 5% off all products.

Vegepods could be the answer you have been looking for, either for yourself or someone you care for. The therapeutic benefits of regular gardening for everyone, no matter their mobility or location, has been proven time and again, so let’s all start getting our hands dirty!
